Michael Essien backs Romelu Lukaku to Reunite with Jose Mourinho

Former Chelsea star Michael Essien believes that Everton striker Romelu Lukaku could work alongside Jose Mourinho at Manchester United despite their differences at Stamford Bridge.

The Belgium international failed to make the cut under the Special One in west London, and this eventually urged him to pursue a permanent move to Goodison Park.

Lukaku has turned into one of the Premier League’s deadliest strikers during his time at Everton and Essien backs him to make an impression under Mourinho, should there be the willingness to work together again, he said: "In general it was good and normal .We all had different relationships with Jose and mine, as everyone knows, is like a father and son. I won't say Romelu's relationship with Jose was the same as mine but, in general, it was normal and they respected each other. If Jose wants him and he wants to play for Jose then yes they can work together. They both have to want to work with each other for that to happen and if the desire is there then yes they can work together."

The former Anderlecht graduate bagged 25 goals during the recently concluded league season, and he is now eyeing a fresh challenge elsewhere with Chelsea among the key contenders for his signature. Nevertheless, Mourinho will have an eye on the Evertonian, should a deal for Alvaro Morata not be concluded in the coming weeks.

Essien is currently plying his trade in the Indonesian league, where he earns a lowly annual package of around $647,000. Nevertheless, he has highlighted his intention to attract more foreign recruits to the Asian nation, where he has enjoyed some success with Persib Bandung. The Ghana international has bagged two goals in eight outings for his new employers, who are placed ninth in the Indonesian top flight.
