Injured Michael Essien Trains Alone

An injured Michael Essien trained separately from the rest of the team at Persib Bandung's training session on Tuesday, as per reports. The 35-year old Ghanaian soccer star has been having recurrent fitness issues. He is now a shadow of his former self and not the very fit player he used to be. Despite all these, there are strong links with a move to the Major League Soccer (MLS).

The former Chelsea and Real Madrid midfielder who now features for Persib Bandung in Indonesia is away from the squad as he continues his personal work on his fitness. The player was pictured in a separate session with club’s physiotherapist Benidiktus Adi Priyanto. Priyanto was pictured helping the player work on his power rather than speed as he is yet to be able to handle quick reaction as part of his recovery process. For now he continues to be in isolation.

Priyanto told reporters: “He has already made a program in London and has come here and I have coordinated with the doctor to see his progress because normally injuries are difficult for fast movement or quick reaction, so we want to see first. If the condition is okay, he can join the team.”

Essien is keen on continuing his career despite the slowdown due to old age and fitness concerns. He is being linked with a possible move to DC United in the MLS. There have been reports that one or two sides in the USL might also be interested. The Champions League winner remains of one the most experienced midfield stalwarts, hence the continued interests in him.
